Building Product Information Requirements (BPIR)

PK Joinery Staff member joining timber following BPIR guidelines

Building Product Information Requirements, commonly referred to as BPIR, provide clear and consistent information about building products used in New Zealand.

The requirements sit under the Building Act 2004 and the Building (Building Product Information Requirements) Regulations 2022. They are intended to make important product information easier to access for building owners, designers, builders and Building Consent Authorities.

PK Joinery manufactures custom timber windows, doors and architectural joinery for projects throughout New Zealand. As our joinery is manufactured to individual project specifications, relevant PK Joinery product lines fall within the Class 2 category of designated building products.

Information provided through BPIR

BPIR gives people involved in a building project access to consistent information about a product or product line and how it is intended to be used.

Depending on the product, this information can include relevant New Zealand Building Code clauses, how the product is expected to contribute to compliance, limitations on its use, and requirements relating to design, installation and maintenance.

For architects, designers, builders and Building Consent Authorities, this information can support product selection and documentation. For building owners, it provides a clearer understanding of the product and the conditions that contribute to its appropriate use and long-term performance.

Class 2 building products

Class 2 applies to custom-made lines of building products manufactured to an individual client’s specifications.

This is particularly relevant to bespoke timber joinery. A window or door may be manufactured specifically for a project, with dimensions, profiles, timber, glazing, hardware, finishes and other details determined by the particular design and specification.

Because these elements can vary between projects, project-specific documentation remains an important part of the process alongside the published BPIR information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BPIR mean a product is certified?

No. BPIR is an information disclosure requirement. It provides information about a building product and its intended use, including information relevant to Building Code compliance. It is not a separate product certification.

Does BPIR replace project-specific drawings and specifications?

No. Bespoke timber joinery still needs to be considered in the context of the individual project.

Dimensions, profiles, glazing, hardware, finishes, site conditions and other requirements may need to be confirmed as the design develops. PK Joinery prepares project-specific manufacturing drawings before production, with the final joinery manufactured to the approved project information.

Who is BPIR information useful for?

BPIR information is relevant to anyone involved in specifying, approving, purchasing or working with building products. This can include architects, designers, builders, Building Consent Authorities, developers and property owners.

Where can I find PK Joinery’s BPIR documents?

PK Joinery’s current BPIR documents are available together on our BPIR Documents page.
