Heritage Timber Joinery for a Grey Lynn Villa Transformation
Traditional exterior joinery for a remarkable character home renovation
Transforming an existing character home while preserving a sense of history requires careful decisions about what is retained, what is changed and how new elements are introduced.
For this substantial Grey Lynn project, a more than 100-year-old bungalow was transformed into a much larger villa-style home designed for multi-generational living. The renovation and extension dramatically changed the scale of the property while retaining the character associated with Auckland’s traditional residential architecture.
PK Joinery manufactured the exterior timber joinery for the project, creating new windows and doors that supported the home’s transformation and complemented its period-inspired design.
Designed by Crosson Architects and built by Murray Long Builders, the finished home demonstrates how traditional timber joinery can help establish continuity between old and new.

Project highlights
Challenge
Creating new exterior joinery appropriate to the character of a major villa-style transformation
Scope
Exterior timber joinery throughout the home
Project
Transformation and extension of a 100+ year-old Grey Lynn bungalow
Outcome
Traditional timber windows and doors that support the character and proportions of the redesigned home
Challenge
Creating something new that feels established
The transformation of an older home presents a different challenge from simply restoring what is already there.
At Grey Lynn, the original bungalow was substantially expanded and reimagined. The finished house includes a second storey, double verandahs and a significantly larger footprint, yet the street-facing architecture retains a strong connection with Auckland’s traditional villas.
The exterior joinery plays an important part in achieving that result.
Windows and doors needed to suit the proportions and detailing of the redesigned home so that the new architecture didn’t feel disconnected from the character of the original property.
Process
Traditional craftsmanship for a major transformation
PK Joinery manufactured the exterior timber joinery required across the project.
For heritage-style work, the success of a window or door isn’t determined by age alone. Proportion, configuration and detailing all influence whether new joinery feels appropriate within a traditional building.
Bespoke manufacture provides the flexibility to respond to those requirements rather than introducing standard contemporary window and door configurations that may look out of place.
That becomes particularly important on a transformation of this scale.
The finished home needed new joinery throughout its substantially altered exterior while maintaining a coherent architectural language across the original and newly created areas.
Design
Joinery that reinforces the villa character
Viewed alongside photographs of the original bungalow, the extent of the transformation is immediately apparent.
The redesigned exterior has the presence and detailing of a substantial villa, with timber windows and doors contributing to its rhythm, symmetry and traditional character.
Rather than drawing attention to which parts of the house are old and which are new, the joinery helps create consistency across the completed building.
This is one of the strengths of custom heritage timber joinery. New windows and doors can be manufactured specifically for the architecture, allowing a renovation or extension to respect the language of an older home without being constrained by standard products.
Outcome
Preserving character while creating a home for the future
The Grey Lynn project demonstrates that respecting the past doesn’t necessarily mean preserving a home exactly as it was.
Here, a century-old bungalow has been substantially transformed to meet the needs of a contemporary, multi-generational household while retaining the character that gives this style of Auckland home its identity.
PK Joinery’s exterior timber joinery contributes to that balance.
By manufacturing windows and doors specifically for the project, the new joinery supports the scale and requirements of the redesigned home while remaining sympathetic to its traditional character.
It is a strong example of the role skilled timber joinery can play when an older Auckland home is being adapted for a new chapter.
