Coastal Timber Joinery for a Waiheke Island Home

Bespoke joinery throughout a substantial coastal residence

Overlooking the Hauraki Gulf towards Motutapu Island, this Waiheke Island home called for an extensive package of bespoke timber joinery to complement its scale, character and coastal setting.

PK Joinery manufactured the exterior joinery for the new build, alongside a range of interior elements including timber doors, mouldings and shutters. One of the home’s standout features is its indoor pool, where large glass bifold doors allow the space to open to the outdoors and make the most of the surrounding views.

The project demonstrates the role timber joinery can play throughout a home, bringing consistency across different spaces while responding to the practical demands of a coastal location.

Joinery for a coastal environment

Coastal homes bring considerations that extend beyond appearance.

Exposure to wind and salt can place additional demands on exterior doors and their moving components, particularly large bifold systems that need to continue operating smoothly over time. For projects in coastal environments, PK Joinery recommends investing in high-quality running gear and hardware suited to the conditions.

At Waiheke, these practical considerations sat alongside an equally important design objective: creating joinery that helped the home make the most of its remarkable setting.

A whole-home approach

Rather than supplying a single feature window or door, PK Joinery’s involvement extended across the home.

The exterior package included timber joinery and substantial bifold doors, while inside, PK Joinery manufactured a range of doors, including both painted finishes and natural oak, as well as mouldings and timber shutters.

Working across such a broad package creates an opportunity for joinery to contribute to the overall character of a home. Different rooms can have their own identity while retaining a sense of continuity in the craftsmanship and detailing.

The island location also required careful planning. Site measurements and other project requirements involved multiple trips to Waiheke, making coordination an important part of delivering the finished joinery.

Opening the pool to the landscape

The indoor pool provides one of the clearest examples of how the joinery responds to the way the home is intended to be used.

Large glazed bifold doors line the pool area, providing expansive views when closed and allowing the space to open up when conditions permit. Rather than feeling enclosed from its coastal surroundings, the pool retains a strong visual and physical connection to the outdoors.

It is a practical solution, but also one that makes the joinery an important part of the experience of the space.

Elsewhere, timber doors, shutters and mouldings introduce warmth and detail to the home’s interiors, demonstrating how bespoke joinery can contribute well beyond windows and exterior doors.

Bespoke timber joinery throughout the home

The completed Waiheke residence showcases the breadth of work possible when timber joinery is considered across an entire home.

From large-scale bifold doors opening the pool to its coastal surroundings to oak interior doors and custom shutters, each element serves a different purpose while contributing to the wider design.

For PK Joinery, the project is also an example of the value of combining craftsmanship with practical experience. Beautiful coastal joinery needs to do more than complement the architecture. It needs to be manufactured with its location, use and long-term performance in mind.
