Project No.04020
Papakura Joinery Appraisal
Dear Sir,
When we tendered the creation of the Kauri Ceiling Pods for the Auckland Art Gallery, we knew their creation would be a challenge to the company who was awarded the contract. They are more akin to boat building than traditional building construction.
Due to their unique sculptural design with gently curving surfaces we required a full mock up of one pod to be constructed, to ensure all parties understood the design, and construction challenges. In this process we where extremely pleased how Papakura Joinery applied themselves with energy and enthusiasm to the creation of this mock- up and constructively worked with Peter Hogan the engineer, Mike Farrelly of Hawkins and ourselves to resolve technical issues that arose through this process. Papakura Joinery were solution focused, bringing their vast experience and wisdom in working with timber to resolve best practice solutions to any problems we encountered in manufacturing these ceiling pods. The team were welcomed getting into the detail and discussed fully the construction techniques employed in creating the pods. It is this discipline of working through the detail which has contributed greatly to very resolved nature the finish kauri ceilings the Art Gallery now display.
The process of constructing the large numbers of triangular sections, that make these pods, had to follow a demanding programme, to ensure they were ready for erection on site at the correct time. This required a high level of management. This was well handled by Papakura Joinery as I am not aware of any time on site where Hawkins did not have pods ready for assembly to the structure when they required them. Under any pressures to have components ready for site Papkura Joinery did not compromise their high standards of workmanship to meet a delivery, which a lesser team may have been tempted to do. Jim Irvine and his team were a pleasure to deal with, as they patiently worked through the kauri selection process and construction of the pods. As this is unique and demanding work we saw the team developing their own carpentry skills to meet the challenge of this project, and so appreciate their commitment only to present work of a high standard of workmanship and finish. Cameron really stands out as one who revealed in the challenge of constructing these pods with their complex curving surfaces and has finely honed his carpentry skills in this process. It is this commitment to excellence each person on the team had in performing their individual tasks at such a high standard, that has prodused an end result which is so spectacular. The ceilings of the Art Gallery will amaze and delight scores of Gallery visitors for decades, because they have been so skilfully and expertly constructed by a very competent team of craftsmen that work for Papakura Joinery.
We found the staff at Papakura Joinery a pleasure to work with, and would recommend this team to anyone requiring a demanding carpentry project constructed.
Kind regards,
Russell Pinel - Senior Associate

We would like to thank Papakura Joinery Ltd for the supply of joinery to our project in Karaka. The manner in which all your staff applied themselves to the interpretation of the front entry door design, selection of mouldings, timber and attention to detail were outstanding. You provided Jaros Construction, the Client and the Designer with a product which far surpassed our expectations. This also applied to the supply of internal doors, skirting and architraves. The quality of all products supplied by your company allowed us to achieve an excellent standard of finish on the project, which is greatly appreciated by Jaros Construction Ltd. With service and quality that we have received on this project and previous projects, we look forward to continuing our association together.

Dear Mr Burnside
While I appreciate that this must have been a pretty small order by your company standards. I was treated like my order was worth thousands and given a very clear indication that my business was important.
Everyone I delt with was very obliging and what they undertook to do was right on the button from Glenn (excellent manner and follow-up) to the young man who measured the job, the man who helped me try and get the sash into the car (unsuccessfully) to the people who organised the delivery and to the very friendly receptionist. All together a superb customer service performance. I have spent 40 years in training staff in customer relations/service and your company's performance to me could be used as a yardstick for quality performance. My thanks to all.
Kind regards,
